About

Reading Kaohsiung, Reading the World
Kaohsiung that We Haven’t Known Yet; A World That We Haven’t Known Yet

A book is a window, looking outward, that expands our understanding of the world. Bookstores and libraries are places that connect with the world.

The 2023 Kaohsiung Reading Festival theme is exploration, inviting local bookstores and libraries in Kaohsiung to share their worldviews. It explains how to ask questions with a book, be inspired, and find direction from a book. It is hoped that in this era of superficial information and great anxiety, people can return to reading, gain stability, and experience more profoundly.

The 2023 Festival also invites drama teams, musicians, poets from home and abroad, local craftsmen, and other cross-disciplinary creators to gather in Kaohsiung, incorporating bookstores, art and cultural spaces, and campuses with the Festival to present Kaohsiung’s rich energy to readers. “Reading” is not limited to books. Reading ability can be demonstrated in understanding and appreciating a piece of music, a painting, a city, and a person. Meanwhile, the curatorial team also posed questions to the speakers from afar to bring their views on Kaohsiung and the harbor city and invited Kaohsiung citizens to exchange ideas with the speakers together.

The 2023 Kaohsiung Reading Festival will be a feast of thinking driven by the whole city.

The festival runs from November 11th to November 28th, showcasing a book fair, a poetry festival, a market, art performances, a film festival, and more than 100 lectures.

It is hoped that this reading festival will allow visitors to read not only books but also the city.
